Submission Guidelines

OVERVIEW:

Submissions to THEN should tell a story, in a compelling way, about something exceptional related to learning, teaching, and technology.

We welcome submissions that:

... are accessible and potentially meaningful to a wide audience of researchers, students, and practitioners (any specialized vocabulary, perspectives, or concepts should be explained in a way that is easily understood by non-specialists);

... use innovative formats for communicating ideas;

... include the authors' personal perspectives;

... bridge conceptual, disciplinary, or institutional boundaries;

... include the voices of K-12 or college students reflecting on their own education.

In general, THEN does not publish submissions that simply describe a project or piece of software, or studies that rely primarily on statistical or experimental methods.

Submissions will be assigned to an associate editor, who will send it out for blind review. "Commentary" and "Review" submissions may, at the editors' discretion, be reviewed in an expedited way by members of the Editorial Board. Accepted submissions may be edited for clarity.

TYPES OF SUBMISSIONS:

FEATURE ARTICLES should be between 3000 and 10,000 words in length. Illustrations, figures, and other media may be attached; when published, they will normally appear at the end of the article.

MULTIMEDIA should be in a format commonly found on the web (e.g., JPEG, Quicktime, RealMedia, Flash, Java, etc.). Unless attached to an article, multimedia should include a text abstract of approximately 200 words.

COMMENTARY on previously published feature articles or multimedia should be between 500 and 1500 words in length.

REVIEWS of seminal books, events, projects, or other works should be be approximately 1000-2000 words in length, and should be in the spirit of the general guidelines above.

ESSAYS that briefly explore important ideas or trends at the intersections of technology, humanities, education, and narrative should be approximately 1000-2000 words in length.

ANNOUNCEMENTS of publications, events, and other items of potential broad interest among THEN readers should be limited to 100 words and include both a web link and email contact for further information.

SECTION 16

The United States Land Ordinance of 1785 declared that one section--Section 16--of every township was to be reserved for the maintenance of public schools.

In that spirit, we have reserved one section of THEN for the voices of students reflecting on their own education, or on the education of others within their communities.

A special Section 16 editorial team, made up of one high school student, one college student, one K-12 teacher, and one educational researcher, will review submissions.

Authors may be students at any level of public education, and are encouraged to work with teachers or researchers to create high-quality narratives (in any medium) that explore exceptional learning experiences involving technology.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

All work should be submitted via the appropriate forms on the THEN website. If, for technical or logistical reasons, a submission cannot be uploaded via the website, please contact the chief editors at editor@thenjournal.org.

In general, text should be formatted as PLAIN TEXT.

Paragraphs should be formatted without indentations, leaving a blank line between paragraphs.

HTML tags may be used judiciously, including:
<b>...</b> for section headings, which should be on a separate line with one blank line above and below

It is NOT necessary to use HTML for ordinary paragraph or line breaks.

In cases where special formatting is necessary to preserve the integrity of a submission, please contact the editors.
